
Super tweeters are among the most debated components in the world of high-fidelity audio.
Some consider them a fundamental upgrade, while others see them as nothing more than an audiophile suggestion.
The question, however, is very simple: do they really make a difference?

What Super Tweeters Are — and What They Are Not
A super tweeter operates over a very high frequency range, generally above 10–15 kHz, extending well beyond 40–50 kHz.
But the point is not so much to directly “hear” these frequencies.
Their role is different: they can influence the overall behavior of the system in terms of:
- harmonics
- transients
- spatial perception
And this is precisely why we’re not simply talking about “more sound,” but about a sound that changes in the way it is perceived.

An idea that dates back to the 1980s
The concept of a super tweeter is not new at all.
The ELAC 4Pi models date back to the 1980s, when the goal was not only to extend frequency response but also to improve the spatial and ambient rendering of sound.
What we see today is, in fact, a modern evolution of that idea.

360-degree dispersion: the real key point
Unlike a traditional tweeter, the ELAC 4Pi super tweeters operate with 360° dispersion.
This means the sound is not simply projected toward the listening position, but spreads much more throughout the room.
It is precisely this interaction with the room that can help create a sense of:
- greater air
- a wider soundstage
- greater naturalness

Integration and adjustments: the most critical aspect
Super tweeters are not a plug-and-play upgrade.
To work properly, they must be integrated into the system.
On the bottom, we find two essential adjustments:
- Level (±3 dB): controls how much the super tweeter contributes to the system
- Crossover frequency (10 / 12 / 15 kHz): determines the point at which it begins to operate
The goal is not to add something in an obvious way, but to find the point where the super tweeter’s contribution integrates with the speaker
If the level is too high, the sound can become artificial.
If it is too low, the result may be imperceptible.

The system used for the test
For this test, I used the following system:
- Pre + Power Amplifier Galion
- DIY streamer built with Ian Canada components
- DAC Denafrips Pontus 15th Anniversary
- ESB Gold Five speakers
The test was conducted under consistent conditions:
- same tracks
- same volume
- same system
first without and then with the super tweeters.

What is actually perceived during listening
The change is not immediate and, above all, should not be sought in simple quantity.
It’s not about “more highs” or “more detail” in a simplistic sense.
What may instead emerge is:
- a more open soundstage
- greater air between instruments
- a sense of more natural sound
It is a subtle effect, not something obvious on first listen, but when it emerges, it can be recognizable.
Less obvious but very interesting observations
Beyond the more immediate aspects, less obvious but very interesting elements may emerge.
In particular:
- greater vocal expressiveness
- better readability of micro-modulations
- a more free and responsive perceived dynamics
- a more articulated, readable, and structured bass
This last aspect may seem counterintuitive, but it can be linked to the reconstruction of harmonic content that contributes to the overall perception of sound.
When this information is better reproduced, even the low-frequency range can appear more coherent and well-defined.
It’s not an upgrade for everyone
And this is where many people go wrong.
Super tweeters:
- do not automatically improve any system
- are not simply meant to add high frequencies
They work when the system is already well-balanced and when you are seeking a subtle improvement in terms of air, naturalness, and spatiality.
If the system is already unbalanced, or if you’re simply looking for more brightness, the result can get worse.
Conclusion
Super tweeters are not meant to impress.
They are meant to refine.
They don’t add: they reveal.
And that is precisely why they are not a universal upgrade, but a component to be evaluated carefully, system by system.
