Ray Tubes RESERVE EL34 are among the modern vacuum tubes currently attracting significant attention from audiophiles. In this review, I installed them in my long-time Yaqin MC-10L to find out whether they can be considered a credible alternative to NOS (New Old Stock) tubes.
Over the past few months, I have dedicated several pieces of content to the topic of NOS tubes, a subject that continues to fascinate and divide audiophiles all over the world.
On one side are those who consider classic Mullard, Telefunken, RCA, and Philips tubes to be the ultimate benchmark. On the other are those who believe that modern production tubes have now reached a level of quality that makes them a credible alternative, often offering a more practical and accessible solution.
Who Is Ray Tubes?
Ray Tubes is a relatively young company that has decided to take a different path compared to the traditional tube market.
Its stated goal is not simply to sell vacuum tubes, but to offer a carefully selected, tested, and verified product through a process that includes:
- Precise matching
- Pre-delivery burn-in
- Extensive quality control
- Electrical and functional testing
- Certification of each matched set
The idea behind the project is to address some of the challenges that characterize today’s NOS tube market:
- increasingly limited availability;
- authenticity that is not always easy to verify;
- often very high prices;
- quality that can vary significantly from one tube to another.
This attention to detail extends beyond the tubes themselves, encompassing everything from the hand-drawn technical illustrations to the premium packaging of the RESERVE series.
Unboxing and Initial Impressions
The packaging of the Ray Tubes RESERVE EL34 immediately gives the impression of a premium product.
Every detail is thoughtfully executed, and the package includes documentation covering the matching process and the quality control procedures carried out before shipment.
While packaging does not directly affect sound quality, it reflects the company’s philosophy and the level of care invested in the product as a whole.
Installing the Ray Tubes RESERVE EL34 in the Yaqin MC-10L
For this review, I chose to use my Yaqin MC-10L, an amplifier that has been part of my system for many years and whose sound characteristics I know inside and out.
After switching off the amplifier and allowing the old EL34 tubes to cool down completely, I replaced the existing matched quad with the new Ray Tubes RESERVE EL34.
The next step was to verify and adjust the bias, using a digital multimeter and the built-in test points provided on the amplifier’s chassis.
As with any tube amplifier, care should always be taken during installation, and the manufacturer's recommended procedures should be followed at all times.
Listening Impressions
The impressions shared in this article are based on approximately 30 hours of listening and use.
Many tube enthusiasts believe that vacuum tubes continue to settle in and evolve over the course of 50, 100, or even more hours of use. For that reason, these observations should be viewed as preliminary rather than definitive conclusions.
That being said, the initial results were immediately encouraging.
The Yaqin MC-10L sounded revitalized, with greater clarity, improved control, and a renewed sense of energy.
The midrange is well resolved, the musical presentation feels more cohesive and structured, and the overall listening experience is thoroughly enjoyable.
Naturally, part of the improvement may be due to the fact that the previous EL34 tubes had accumulated many years of use. However, from the very first listening sessions, the Ray Tubes showed qualities that clearly deserve attention.
NOS or Modern Production Tubes?
This is arguably the most interesting question raised by this entire discussion.
NOS tubes still carry a tremendous amount of appeal and remain an important part of audio history.
However, acquiring NOS tubes today often means dealing with high prices and a fair amount of uncertainty surrounding their provenance, condition, and authenticity.
Based on this experience, I believe that modern premium-production tubes deserve serious consideration from today's audiophiles.
In my system and listening environment, the Ray Tubes RESERVE EL34 demonstrated that they can deliver a highly compelling performance, offering a credible alternative to the increasingly rare and costly NOS market.
Conclusion
After roughly 30 hours of use, the Ray Tubes RESERVE EL34 left me with a very positive overall impression.
It is still too early for a final verdict, and I plan to continue listening over the coming weeks to better understand how these tubes evolve as they complete their burn-in period.
